Ever wondered how do we choose typeface, or have you been like a lot of people pressing the down button clicking on the dropdown menu and looking at different types of typefaces and suddenly found your Cinderella, reason being it to be Beautiful, to be more specific “Beautiful” for you. But that should not be the case definitely. There must be existing some formula in the minds of these graphic designers, fortunately the answer is “Yes”. The judge typeface on the basis of the functionality of the platform and you would not believe but they also find out emotions in typefaces in certain places wherever needed.
Today I’ll be very specific with one scenario, so I was working on a project where I had to make a dashboard and after working out functionality, I was working on “Mood-board” , when it came to choosing the typeface it became really difficult because even after considering different factors like, Legibility, Rendering, Loading Time and Font Type (Serif, Sans Serif, Slab Serif), there were still a lot of options to choose from. Then I went backwards and saw different platforms similar to mine and found which typefaces were they using. I found some interesting facts, for eg. Lets take the example of Freshchat Dashboard
They use “Proxima Nova”, Then I researched upon the characteristics of the typeface and tried finding the reason behind the use of this particular typeface. The Reason was:
Proxima Nova bridges the gap between typefaces like Futura and Akzidenz Grotesk. The resulting hybrid combines modern proportions with a geometric appearance. Originally released in 1994 as Proxima Sans (now discontinued), Proxima Nova expands the original six fonts (three weights with italics) into a full-featured and versatile family of forty-eight fonts (eight weights in three widths with italics). Proxima Nova has gained enormous popularity as a web font, and is now seen on thousands of sites around the world.
And Lets see what Drift does:
They use “Proxima Soft”, Then I researched upon the characteristics of the typeface and tried finding the reason behind the use of this particular typeface. The Reason was:
Proxima Soft is a rounded version of the modern-geometric hybrid sans Proxima Nova. Bearing the same forty-eight styles (eight weights in three widths, plus italics), Proxima Soft fits the bill when you want something a bit warmer and more playful than its older sibling.
However there are other platform like Intercom etc. They use System UI typefaces, reason being it is easier to load on Windows and Mac both as they don’t have to load new fonts from their CSS which makes the platform fast as well.
So these were the different factors used by different platforms to make it more functional and typeface plays a very important role in it. Now maybe we all can find that Cinderella font more logically, I hope so. See you all 🙂
